Description: The small schooner Maid of the Mist encountered a strong gale off Huron Beach while awaiting a load of cedar posts. The ship dragged anchor, grounded and broke its keel. Its wreckage consists of three sections including both sides and the bow buried deeply in the sand. Click here to read more about the Maid of the Mist.

The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary maintains seasonal moorings at many shipwreck sites. Available from May to September, the moorings make for safer diving and also protect shipwrecks from anchor damage. Sanctuary regulations require vessels to use moorings when present.
