The Besser Museum will wrap up the Explore our Native American History along the US 23 Heritage Route lecture series on Monday, October 10th at 7:00 PM. A Celebration of Indigenous People’s Day: The Path Long Trod – US 23 Heritage Route will be the theme of special guest speakers Ellis Olson, Cheboygan historian and author, and Kareen Lewis, basket weaver.  Ellis will discuss his discoveries of years of research tracing the history of the Native American trail along the northeastern shores of Lake Huron.  Kareen Lewis will share her love and skills for native basket weaving.

The Besser Museum houses a large nationally recognized collection of Native American artifacts. One of the most significant archaeological finds in this collection is the perfectly round shale discs found only in Alpena. Scholars have aptly named the discs “Naub-Cow-Zo-Win” meaning “Charms of Personal Significance” in the traditional Algonquin language.

 This event will be filmed
