Every year, the Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary bring the world of cinema to Alpena! For five days in January, northeast Michigan is treated to some of the most impressive ocean and Great Lakes-inspired films from around the world. Film screenings are complemented by social events, educational activities, and opportunities to meet filmmakers. The Thunder Bay International Film Festival is an annual fundraiser for Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, which encompasses 4,300 square miles in northwestern Lake Huron. Designated in 2000, the sanctuary exists to preserve a significant collection of historic shipwrecks, and through innovative and accessible educational programs, works to protect the Great Lakes for future generations.
The festival takes place in Alpena, Michigan at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center -- the headquarters for Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Satellite screenings are held in Rogers City and Harrisville, Michigan. For this year's schedule and ticketing, please visit: http://www.thunderbayfriends.org/film_fest.html
