Mighty Mac Bridge

Learn about the “Mighty Mackinac Bridge -- Then and Now” on Monday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Harrisville branch of the Alcona County Library.  Kim Nowack, Chief Engineer of the Mackinac Bridge will tell us about the building of the bridge and how it has been kept in such good condition throughout its 60 year life.  This program is part of the US-23 Discovery Tour weekend of special events.  Nowack was named Chief Engineer of the Mackinac Bridge in 2002. She is the first female to hold this position in the bridge’s history.  She is responsible for all maintenance and engineering oversight.  She supervises a maintenance staff of around 40 employees including engineers, mechanics, electricians, welders, steeplejacks, bridge workers and laborers.  Nowack and her assistant also design construction projects and manage the contractors and consultants that perform work and inspections on the bridge.  For more information, call 989-724-6796.
