8:30 PM to 10:30 PM

ust before the summer Sun sets low over the western edge of the world at 9:15 p.m., this month’s second Full Moon will rise up in the East at 9:07 p.m., a “new school” Blue Moon that promises rare views, with and without telescopes!

In describing this evening’s program, Headlands Program Director Mary Stewart Adams said, “We’ve gathered a team of professional and amateur astronomers to share their enthusiasm and knowledge of the night sky, with a focus on our nearest celestial companion, the Moon. This program happens in conjunction with the annual Heritage Festival  at the Mackinaw’s Historic Heritage Village.

“It’s a nice opportunity to celebrate with our next door neighbors!”

Though described as a ‘blue’ Moon, the Moon will not appear blue in color. “The name is meant to indicate something rare,” said Adams, “And actually refers to a seasonal mystery that will be explained at tonight’s program.”

Research shows that when the Moon is at the horizon, it can appear different colors (usually orange) because we are looking through nearly 38% more of Earth’s atmosphere than when we view it directly overhead. “If there are storms, pollutants, or other elements populating the atmosphere, then the moonlight shines toward us through that stuff,” said Adams.

“There’s also an interesting phenomena called the ‘Moon illusion’ that we will discuss tonight. This is the optical illusion that makes the Moon appear larger at the horizon than it does when it’s overhead,” said Adams.

Attendance to this evening’s program is free, telescopes with instruction will be provided, and there will be refreshments for purchase, as part of the festivities.

The International Dark Sky Park is located about two miles west of downtown Mackinaw City in northwest lower Michigan.

From downtown Mackinaw City, head west on Central Avenue — the main street through the downtown. Take it as far as it goes, to the T-intersection at Headlands Road. Turn left, or south, on Headlands Road. The Headlands will be a short ways down (about two blocks) on your right. Look for the sign at the entrance.
