Site: Rockport accessed via Rockport Rd. off US 23-N is a decommissioned limestone quarry that offers a view of nature reclaiming her wild beauty. The 4,237-acre state park is located along the shore of Lake Huron. Fossil hunters will find abundant species scattered throughout the park. Other attractions include a deep-water boat launch, shipwrecks, and sink holes. Visitors are advised to use a GPS or compass while exploring along the trails within the area.
Birding: Miles of undisturbed Lake Huron shoreline offer many viewing opportunities for migrating waterbirds. Over 100 species have been reported at the site.
Besser Natural Area is located off Grand Lake Road at the north end of Rockport Recreation Area and has a vault toilet. The site has virgin pines which offer nesting habitat to pine warbler, American redstart, as well as many similar birds. The one-mile hiking loop crosses many woodland habitats.
